Scratches & gouges
Surface scratches are buffed out and recoated; deeper gouges are filled with color-matched wood filler or spot-sanded and blended. Scratches through to bare wood in a whole room are best fixed with a refinish.
Houston’s hardwood repair specialists
Scratched, stained, gapped, cupped or squeaky? We repair hardwood floors board-by-board and match the color so you can’t tell where the damage was — usually for a fraction of the cost of new flooring.

Repair before you replace
Solid hardwood is one of the few flooring materials that can be repaired over and over. A pet stain, a leak by the dishwasher or a deep scratch from moving day usually affects a handful of boards — and those boards can be replaced, blended and refinished so the floor looks whole again.
Bayou City Hardwood Floor Repair focuses on repairing hardwood floors in Houston homes: matching species and board width, mixing stain to match decades of natural aging, and blending the finish so the repair disappears. When a floor truly can’t be saved, we’ll tell you that too.
What we fix
From a single gouge to a kitchen full of cupped boards, here’s how each type of damage is fixed.
Surface scratches are buffed out and recoated; deeper gouges are filled with color-matched wood filler or spot-sanded and blended. Scratches through to bare wood in a whole room are best fixed with a refinish.
Seasonal gaps in Houston’s dry winter months are normal. Wide, permanent gaps are filled with wood slivers glued into place (the best fix for old floors) or flexible filler, then sanded and finished.
Shallow dents in solid hardwood can often be raised with steam; deeper dents are filled and touched up, or the board is replaced if the dent is in a prominent spot.
Holes from removed floor vents, outlets, radiators, kitchen islands or walls are filled by weaving in matching boards so the repair follows the original pattern.
Pet urine reacts with oak tannins and leaves black stains that sanding usually can’t remove. Stained boards are cut out and replaced; claw scratches are removed by recoating or refinishing.
After the infestation is treated, damaged boards and any compromised subfloor are removed and replaced with matched boards — Houston’s Formosan and subterranean termites make this a common repair.
Cupping and buckling are signs of moisture. We find the source, measure moisture, let the floor dry, then flatten, replace or refinish as needed.
Boards that move, pop or squeak are re-secured from below in pier-and-beam crawl spaces or with hidden trim-head screws from above.

Learn moreRepair vs. replace
The answer comes down to how much of the floor is damaged and how much wood is left to sand. Here’s the rule of thumb we use on every estimate:
| Situation | Best option |
|---|---|
| Scratches, dull or worn finish | Screen & recoat or refinish |
| A few stained, cracked or gouged boards | Board replacement |
| Cupping after a leak (no rot) | Dry, then sand & refinish |
| Buckled or rotted section | Replace section + refinish |
| Sanded thin, tongues exposed | Replace floor |
| Damage across 50%+ of the floor | Usually replace |

Stain samples are tested on new boards until they match the existing floor in daylight.

Built for Houston homes
Houston is hard on wood floors. Average humidity stays above 70% for much of the year, which makes wood swell, cup and squeak — and makes finishes cure slowly. Older homes inside the Loop often sit on pier-and-beam foundations over expansive clay soil that shifts with every drought and downpour. And between slab leaks, A/C condensate overflows and tropical storms, water damage is the most common reason we get called.

FAQ
Repairing is almost always cheaper. Most Houston hardwood floor repairs cost $250–$1,500, and even a full refinish runs $3–$8 per square foot, while removing and replacing hardwood typically costs $10–$20+ per square foot. Replacement only makes sense if the boards are rotted, sanded too thin or damaged across most of the floor.
Yes. Damaged sections can be cut out and replaced board-by-board using a lace-in technique, then sanded, stained and finished to match the surrounding floor — no need to replace the whole room.
Yes. Scratches, small gouges, dents and individual damaged boards can be spot-repaired. To make the repair invisible, the finish is usually blended across the full board length or the room is given a screen-and-recoat so the sheen is uniform.
Minor scratch and gouge repairs typically cost $150–$450. Replacing a few boards usually runs $350–$750, larger section repairs $1,200–$3,000, and full sanding and refinishing $3–$8 per square foot. We provide a free written estimate after inspecting the floor.
For old solid-wood floors, thin wood slivers (splines) glued into the gaps are the most durable fix because they move with the floor. Flexible latex or rope-based fillers work for narrow seasonal gaps; rigid wood putty tends to crack and fall out of wider gaps.
Most spot repairs and board replacements are completed in a few hours to one day. Repairs that include refinishing a room take 2–4 days, plus cure time before rugs and heavy furniture go back.
Yes. Damaged engineered planks can be replaced individually, and engineered floors with a thick enough wear layer (usually 2 mm or more) can be sanded and refinished. We check the wear layer before recommending sanding.
